How financially healthy are households in Europe? That’s the key question behind the Master in Finance project with N26, one of Advantere’s flagship research initiatives. Now in its third edition, this project continues to grow in scope and impact.

A Pan-European Collaboration for Impact

This year’s Master in Finance project with N26 marks a milestone: it became Advantere’s first pan-European Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience. Students were challenged to contribute to the Financial Wellness Index (FWI)—a study co-created by Advantere and N26 since the school’s first generation of students.

While the first two editions of the FWI focused exclusively on the Spanish population, the third expanded its scope to N26’s four core markets: Spain, France, Italy, and Germany

The index evaluates financial wellbeing across key dimensions:

  • Income
  • Savings
  • Housing
  • Financial planning
  • Indebtedness
  • Investing
  • Budgeting

The goal is to better understand financial health in Europe and raise awareness through education and research.

Real Research, Real Skills

In this Master in Finance project with N26, students applied financial and analytical skills to a research initiative with real-world impact. Using Matlab and working with fuzzy logic techniques, they developed a multidimensional model to assess financial wellness based on real data.

They collected and interpreted data, explored cross-country differences, and developed meaningful insights  potentially to be used by N26 in its financial strategy accross Europe. Their work contributes to a broader conversation around financial literacy and wellness.

The project, an important components of the Quantitative Methods in Finance course, was guided by Professor Emilio Llorente Cano, FRM, who has been involved since the first edition, and Jorge Martín, Director of the Master in Finance. Their leadership ensured academic depth and professional relevance throughout the process.

Working Together for Financial Wellness

This collaboration reflects a joint commitment to advancing financial wellness across Europe. Through data and purpose-driven learning, the Master in Finance project with N26 empowers students to drive change where it matters.

It’s more than research, it’s a meaningful step toward making finance more inclusive, more human, and more impactful.
